St Leonards Church, Bridgnorth
Attraction in Bridgnorth, Shropshire
Victorian restored church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Open to visitors, schools and groups. Various concerts and exhibitions during the year.
When viewing the Shropshire town of Bridgnorth from across the river Severn two features can clearly be seen to dominate the skyline. The gothic church tower of St. Leonard's at one end and the classical tower of St. Mary's (now the parish church) at the other.
St Leonard's is a Victorian restored church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The massive sandstone church stands on a hilltop in its own churchyard surrounded by a peaceful oval of charming buildings. It is reminiscent of a small cathedral close.
Between the buildings there are glimpses of the Severn Valley far below.
The church was destroyed by a fire that swept through Bridgnorth's High town during the Civil War. Consequently most of the medieval church was destroyed however, the church was repaired and a magnificent roof was installed in the 17th Century.
By the 19th Century the church was again in a very poor state but the chancel was restored in 1846 and the western parts in 1860-1 by W. Slater. It was during this work that the north aisle was added to the church making the present church as wide as it is long.
What stands today dates mostly from 1860-62 and the fine fittings and furniture date from the 19th Century and are of the highest quality.
There is a fine 17th century hammer-beam roof in the nave.
The church is open to visitors, schools and groups and there are various concerts and exhibitions during the year.
