Highley Colliery was once at the heart of the rich Shropshire coalfields. The pit closed in 1969 but the villagestill has pride in its mining heritage. This is reflected in the Discovery Trail, a specially commissioned series of artworks which leads visitors from the Severn Valley Railway to the village centre. The works - sculptures, bronzes and ceramics - show the history of Highley from Domesday to the present, and the men who cut the coal are given their due prominence.
The Severn Valley Country Park is a nature lovers paradise of 180 acres, spanning both sides of the river and connected by a footbridge. Around every corner is a settlement, which, for the most part has evolved from ancient foundations.
