Thousands of bikers expected for charity ride out
21st April 2011
Last year’s event saw almost 3,000 bikers travelling the route from Shrewsbury to Cosford to help raise money for the RAF Associations Wings Appeal and organisers are hoping to see a record number of bikers taking part again this year.
RAF Museum Cosford General Manager, Alex Medhurst says:
“The events held over the last two years have attracted thousands of bikers and proved to be an incredible visual spectacle. Hundreds of members of the public lined the bridges of the M54 to watch the bikers make their way to the Museum. This year along with the usual traders we also have a fun fair and a band playing at the Museum, making it a fun day out for everyone. ”
The money raised from the ride out will go towards projects including the RAF Association Wings Appeal, ‘Miles More Minutes’ campaign, which aims to provide personnel who are serving overseas with more telephone time to call home. Serving personnel are currently allocated 4 ½ minutes of talk time per day on an MOD line. Just £20 a month can provide one person with six extra minutes a day to call home.
The RAF Museum, which is free admission, will use money raised to support the maintenance of the Museum’s aircraft collection and exhibitions. The RAF Museum aims to educate and inform present and future generations about the history and traditions of the Royal Air Force, air power and defence and aviation links with the Royal Air Force as well as to enlighten, excite and entertain our visitors.
Participants are asked to arrive at Shrewsbury’s Meole Brace park and ride from 10.00am and will depart for the RAF Museum Cosford at 11.30am. Bikers will travel ‘on mass’ by police escort along the M54 motorway.
Registration costs just £5 per person, with all proceeds being shared equally between the RAF Association's Wings Appeal and the RAF Museum.
