PETER'S RAILWAY TO BE STATIONED AT THE ENGINE HOUSE
16th May 2014
The Peter’s Railway Young Engineers Centre opens at The Engine House, Highley, on Saturday, 24th May and will teach children more about railway engineering and how a steam locomotive works. The Young Engineers Centre will feature interactive exhibits and informative visuals from Christopher Vine’s popular children’s books about Peter, his Grandpa and the miniature steam railway they build and operate down on the farm.
To launch the exhibition, the books’ author Christopher Vine will be putting in an appearance on 24th, 25th and 26th May to meet budding engineers and sign copies of his books. He will also showcase miniature steam engine ‘Bongo’ (the model for engine ‘Fiery Fox’ in the Peter’s Railway series) during the three days.
Other exhibits will include a piston from full sized locomotive BR Class 4 no. 75069 and point rod, coil spring and pressure gauge demos.
There will also be a Peter’s Railway treasure hunt and a quiz which children can participate in throughout the season with some great prizes up for grabs.
On Saturday, 24th May, which also coincides with the start of half-term activities at the Railway, every child who brings a copy of a Peter’s Railway book, or buys one on the day, will receive a free return child’s Freedom of the Line ticket to visit the exhibition at The Engine House.
Clare Gibbard, the SVR’s marketing and communications manager, said: “We are very excited to be opening the Peter’s Railway Young Engineers Centre at The Engine House to add to the wonderful range of exhibits already on offer there.
“We know a lot of the families that visit us are huge fans of Chris’s books and the exhibit is both the perfect introduction to railways for a growing new audience of steam fans and a thorough lesson in railway engineering for budding young engineers.”
The Peter’s Railway Young Engineers Centre will run at The Engine House until 30th November (see visitor centre opening times for more information).
Entrance to the Engine House Visitor Centre and Young Engineer’s Centre is FREE with a ‘Freedom of the line’ ticket or Annual Family Pass.
Train services at the SVR are now running daily until Sunday, 5th October.
