Museum hosts sign language day
16th September 2013
Taking place on Sunday 29th September 2013 from 10am to 4pm, the event is open to the public and will see around 70 visitors touring the Museum. Qualified interpreters will accompany six Museum Guides on tours of the aircraft and exhibits on display to share the guide’s knowledge.
Roisin Gray, Founder of Deaf Smart, said:
"I am really excited about having a fully accessible day at this fantastic venue. I am sure with the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the RAF Museum Cosford and its staff, the day will be a great success. I certainly applaud the RAF Museum for hosting a special day for Deaf and hearing impaired people. I hope that this will be the first of many events at Cosford and that other organisations will follow their lead and host a similar event of their own.”
Deaf Smart is a non-profit Community Interest Company based in Telford, Shropshire who provides free support to members of the deaf community. They assist organisations who wish to understand and communicate more effectively with the deaf community and in doing so help to bring equality to deaf and hard of hearing people. Sue Fitzsimmons, Head of Access and Learning at RAF Museum, said:
“We see this day as a wonderful opportunity to engage with those whom British Sign Language is their first language. We are looking forward to working with Deaf Smart to develop the service we offer to Deaf and hearing impaired visitors and we will use the feedback from this day to develop future opportunities.”
