Museum hosts sign language day in
Members of the public whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL) are invited to enjoy a free BSL Interpreted Day at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford. The event is in conjunction with Deaf Smart, a Shropshire based non-profit organisation for Deaf people.

Taking place on Sunday 29th September 2013 from 10am to 4pm, the event is open to the public and will see around 70 visitors touring the Museum. Qualified interpreters will accompany six Museum Guides on tours of the aircraft and exhibits on display to share the guide’s knowledge.

Roisin Gray, Founder of Deaf Smart, said:

"I am really excited about having a fully accessible day at this fantastic venue. I am sure with the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the RAF Museum Cosford and its staff, the day will be a great success. I certainly applaud the RAF Museum for hosting a special day for Deaf and hearing impaired people. I hope that this will be the first of many events at Cosford and that other organisations will follow their lead and host a similar event of their own.”

Deaf Smart is a non-profit Community Interest Company based in Telford, Shropshire who provides free support to members of the deaf community. They assist organisations who wish to understand and communicate more effectively with the deaf community and in doing so help to bring equality to deaf and hard of hearing people. As experienced deaf awareness practitioners and trainers, they deliver courses to organisations within the public and private sectors, service organisations and individuals. They offer support to deaf people in the local community helping them access services, gain employment and deal with day to day problems.

Sue Fitzsimmons, Head of Access and Learning at RAF Museum, said:

“We see this day as a wonderful opportunity to engage with those whom British Sign Language is their first language. We are looking forward to working with Deaf Smart to develop the service we offer to Deaf and hearing impaired visitors and we will use the feedback from this day to develop future opportunities.”

Numbers to the event are limited and anyone interested in attending must register in advance by Sunday 22nd September. To book your place, please email Roisin Gray from Deaf Smart on roisin@deafsmart.co.uk or SMS/Text only: 07791 213055.

The Museum is open daily from 10am and admission is FREE. For further information on our access policy, please visit the Museum website www.rafmuseum.org or call 01902 376200.
