Harvest time in September is a great time for discovering new local food & drinks. As Shropshire is widely thought of now as one of England’s most foodie counties, it’s a great place to be at this time of year. At the Apley Taste off on Saturday September 27th customers & visitors will have the opportunity meet over twenty of Shropshire’s food & drinks producers, chat with them about their products & enjoy free samples.
"It'll be a great day out for all the family", said Lord Hamilton, owner of the Apley Estate. "It's very like a harvest food festival, but we renamed it the Apley Taste Off, to emphasise the amazing variety of free food tasters on offer. There will be children's activities organised by Pigg's Playbarn, take away food in the Courtyard for all the family & Scotty's Animal Park will have their bouncy castle open for the younger children." A band of six saxophonists from The Abraham Darby Academy, Telford will be playing over lunchtime, 11.30 – 1.30pm.
Lady Harriet Hamilton, Marketing Manager, added "Harvest is a very special time of year – the farmer's year end, but also of new beginnings, when new crops are planted & the children go back to school. At Apley, the production processes are closely linked, so the Estate farms & Walled Gardens supply the Farm Shop directly, with very few food miles. Customers love this, as increasingly they like to know where their food comes from. Saturday's event adds to that by giving them the chance to meet & chat with the producers themselves. Food always tastes better & is more interesting when you know a bit about it! Perhaps it will even help introduce changes into some weekly shopping baskets!”
Amongst the producers attending will be honey from the Apley Estate, Bennett's icecream, Bings Heath Smokery smoked salmon & meats, Darlingtons jams & chutneys, Cottage Delight jams & biscuits, Croome's Cuisine flavoured cheeses, Great Ness Oil, Halfpenny Green Vineyards, Heather's Harvest jams, Ludlow Nut Company, Mike's Homemade jams & chutneys, Salop Pickle’s pickled vegetables, Scarlett & Mustard dressings, Shropshire Spices & stuffings , Sloemotion gin, whisky & vodkas, The Original Egg Company quails eggs, the Tilley Green Coffee Company coffees & teas & the Head Gardener from Apley’s own Walled Garden. Apley’s own cake baker Julie & butcher Mark Lowe will also be offering tasters.
