EVERY morning for the past two weeks, the steam engine which has run from the Severn Valley Railway’s locomotive depot at Bewdley, to Kidderminster, to work the first passenger train of the day from the railway’s southern terminus, has been taking an unusually long time to get there. And the reason is, ‘the elephant stop.’

HARD on the heels of yesterday’s Royal Visit by HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG KCVO, the Severn Valley Railway moves to its main event in celebration of the line’s 150th anniversary this weekend (May 19th & 20th) – and the visit of HM Queen Victoria!

THE 150th ANNIVERSARY of the Severn Valley Railway is to receive Royal recognition, with the official visit to the Kidderminster - Bridgnorth steam heritage line by HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG, DCVO, on a day of special commemoration next Monday, May 14th.

Almost 1,000 bikers from across the Midlands took part in the Bike 4 Life Easter Run last weekend in aid of two local charities. Raising money for the Midlands Air Ambulance and Royal Air Force Museum, bikers travelled on mass from Shrewsbury Meole Brace park and ride along the M54 to the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford.

A 112-year-old steam locomotive which has travelled the country acting the role of ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’, makes its debut appearance at the NEC, Birmingham, today, in a flag-waving exercise by the engine’s custodians, the Severn Valley Railway.

Youngsters across the county will be the focus of poetry and workshops at this year’s Wenlock Poetry Festival. The event, which will take place in Much Wenlock from April 13 to 15, features some of the best poets writing today with a line-up including Carol Ann Duffy, Liz Lockhead, Fiona Sampson and Nick Drake.

A new book which tells the tale of the Wenlock Olympian Games through the eyes of a piglet has been launched. This beautifully-illustrated children’s book follows Peggy the Much Wenlock Piglet as she takes part in the town’s games organised by Dr William Penny Brookes, the inspiration for the modern Olympic movement.

IT’S the surest sign that Spring is on its way - the Severn Valley Railway is reopening for the new season this coming Saturday, February 11th, after a winter shutdown that has seen the Kidderminster-to-Bridgnorth steam heritage line invest more than a quarter of a million pounds on track renewals.
